Google Maps for the iPhone Now Including Ads

Even though Google Maps on the iPhone is free, it's still Google and Google is in the business of selling ads. Per The Apple Blog, Google is now serving up sponsored ad links with its Google Maps app for the iPhone.

It may not be your thing, but it's something you'll have to deal with.

The entire world exists so someone can get your money. Google is probably the best and most powerful at this. I hate it. For a brief time we had some pure application experience to enjoy. Now we'll likely have to OPT OUT rather than IN to get on with whatever we are doing. I hope I am wrong. I hope I can buy out of such an intrusion. IF I WANT SOME PRODUCT I CAN GO FIND IT WITHOUT SOME MARKETING NITWIT BADGERING ME.

To Think Google isn't in the business of making money is naive. Yet they do have to prove they can generate revenue from anything but advertising.

The real trouble is that we have all become hooked on the free things they provide, blithely ignoring the advertisement within them or the way they generate the ability to advertise better.

With all businesses what happens when revenue declines or something does it better? It will eventually happen. Don't become so enamored with what Google provides that we forget that there are many more services that provide the same thing. Perhaps not identical. For instance....DropBox does far better for document storage then Google Docs. There is DimDim for free web conferencing and collaboration.

Look. Google isn't inventing anything. They innovating. Taking what we know and changing it or enhancing it. Nothing more.

All in all though this is why I am moving off of Google Applications. Its getting to be too much of what I do and I am not liking it. The only Google feature I use any more is Calendar and once I can find something that meets that need it will be done too.
