Today Google announced on the Gmail Blog that Gmail now supports push email for the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. The new addition is actually part of the Google Sync service which allows users to sync contacts and calendars from their Google accounts. To receive push Gmail, you'll need to set up your Google account as a Microsoft Exchange service in your iPhone's settings. More instructions are available on Google's help page.
I've tried setting up my Gmail account to receive push email with no luck Google may still be in the process of rolling out the service to some accounts. Let us know in the comments if you get it working!

WTF?
I got it to work just fine.
Thanks for your imput.
Working great!
Re: using Exchange - I think Apple will add this into the Gmail option in a software update like they did for IMAP.
Regarding the reply-to address issue, I configured my account so the "Email" field in the Account Info section is my non-gmail email. When I compose an email, this address shows up in the From address. However, when someone receives the email, it shows my @gmail.com address in the From line.
Any ideas?
Complaints of battery life
I have acceptable battery life in that I can work though an entire day and not run out of battery.
I turned on the gmail exchange option and my battery started running out a lot faster. I was about 40%'ish by 11am which is not good.
