Google Announces Push Gmail for iPhone Users

Today Google announced on the Gmail Blog that Gmail now supports push email for the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. The new addition is actually part of the Google Sync service which allows users to sync contacts and calendars from their Google accounts. To receive push Gmail, you'll need to set up your Google account as a Microsoft Exchange service in your iPhone's settings. More instructions are available on Google's help page.

I've tried setting up my Gmail account to receive push email with no luck Google may still be in the process of rolling out the service to some accounts. Let us know in the comments if you get it working!

its working fine but ive had the push contacts and calendars going for months
just flipped the switch and it worked but it is not wanting to pull old emails for me

It would be nice if....

It would be nice if Google would provide the Push Mail without utilizing the Exchange option as that prevents those of us that are already using the Exchange option on our Corporate Email Systems. You can utilized the Exchange option for one source.

You know what's funny.... I almost bought an app to push my email for gmail. Going to try this out now

WTF?

WHY in the world do people have to have PUSH for anything? are you so impatient that you have to have that spam email the second it becomes available? why cant you just check your email. I dont understand how so many people can want something so stupid. talk about a waste of power.

I got it to work just fine.

I don't think its on a per-account basis Michael. I think its the speed of the Push Service. I sent myself three tests and two of them came almost immediately, while the third took a good three minutes to come through. Its just like the rest of the iPhone's Push Service. Its a hit or miss sometimes. I've had NotifyMe send me an alert at 02:38pm when it was set to 02:30pm. I think its just an iPhone thing. I think you should give it another try. I'll tell you one thing though, this sure beats the AppStore Apps and setting the Fetch to fifteen minutes.

Thanks for your imput.

I use my email for work and they're quite time sensitive at times thank you. Go back to your job at McDonald's.

It's working for me now!

Working great!

The emails are arriving under 20 seconds and the mail notification goes up so it's finally ALMOST comparable to a blackberry push email, just not as rapid!

Second that notion

I got this working, but I don't want to use exchange either. I want to set up another gmail account but I can wait.

I can't seem to get old emails or set my reply-to address (as a different address than my @gmail.com address). Anyone else see this?

It took a while for all my email to push through initially but it's working well now.

Re: using Exchange - I think Apple will add this into the Gmail option in a software update like they did for IMAP.

I've let the account sit for over 24 hours now but some folders/tags still don't show any emails. Note that I am, however, getting new mail on my iPhone very quickly after it shows up in gmail. There are some folders with a mixture of old and new emails and only the new emails show up. I've set "Mail Days to Sync" to "No Limit" but can't seem to encourage my iPhone to download older mail.

Regarding the reply-to address issue, I configured my account so the "Email" field in the Account Info section is my non-gmail email. When I compose an email, this address shows up in the From address. However, when someone receives the email, it shows my @gmail.com address in the From line.

Any ideas?

Complaints of battery life

I can now see why some people complain about the battery life.

I have acceptable battery life in that I can work though an entire day and not run out of battery.

I turned on the gmail exchange option and my battery started running out a lot faster. I was about 40%'ish by 11am which is not good.

The Google guys actually mentioned that on their post. I may end up turning it off if I notice it too.

It's working quite splendidly for me.
