Apple To Preview iPhone OS 3.0 On March 17th

Engadget reports that Apple will be previewing iPhone OS 3.0 at a special event on March 17th. With the new OS, Apple will also be updating a revised edition of their SDK. The event will take place at 10am PST, and is being described by Apple as an "advance preview of what we're building", so it's unlikely that they'll have it ready for release by that time, but hopefully we'll start seeing some of those features we've been waiting for.

MuscleNerd has confirmed over Twitter that, as they suspected, 2.2.1 does in fact break the "injection hole" that project yellowsn0w uses to modify the firmware to unlock the device for use on any carrier. He posted a video explaining the situation on Qik.

Firmware Version 2.2.1 Released, Dev Team Warns Unlockers To Wait

Software update version 2.2.1 (5H11a), is now available in iTunes. We haven't had time to check it out, and neither has the Dev Team. Rumor: 2.1 Software To Launch This Tuesday

Ars Technica says they have word from the inside that Apple is expecting to launch iPhone Software version 2.1 on September 9th. Particularly interesting about the rumor is the claim that in addition to what is already known about 2.1, Apple withheld certain parts of the new OS from the developer seed in order to keep them a secret. On one hand, the news is exciting in that they may be hiding some cool new feature. On the other, they could also be something bad. We'll have to wait until Tuesday to find out.

Behind The 2.0.2 Update And Reception Issues

Apple said that the latest 2.0.2 software update was supposed to help with the issue concerning dropped calls, but a report by Roughly Drafted explains in further detail what the issue may be. They claim to have word from "a source close to AT&T" that the real problem may have been something else entirely.

Apple Sends SMS Reminder Of 2.0.2 Update

Suzanne Choney, a writer for MSNBC publicly pleaded Apple to send text messages to iPhone users to notify them of the recent firmware update, with the hope that it might fix some of the problems people have been having with the 2.0 software since it's launch. Her view was that if the update does help, most people probably won't know about it unless Apple or AT&T tell them about it. While we do know that the 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 updates don't fix the crashes, it looks like the company has decided to take his advice.

2.1 Software Breaks OpenClip Framework

Zak White's open-source copy and paste framework OpenClip was a very ingenious solution to what seemed like an impossible problem, but as great as it would be to finally have copy and paste for at least some apps, it has been found that OpenClip's inevitable drawback keeps it from working in the upcoming 2.1 firmware update.

iPhone owners with jailbroken iPhones will be locked out once again. Unlocked phones may be locked as well, although we haven't gotten any official word yet. If you require a jailbroken or unlocked iPhone, we recommend holding off until the community has given it a try. As always, remember to back up your iPhone before updating to the new version. This is done automatically each time you sync your iPhone.
