At long last, Sling Media has released the 3G-capable version of their TV streaming application, SlingPlayer Mobile [App Store, $29.99], to the App Store. The new version is able to stream video from your TV connection at home to your iPhone, and now instead of being restricted to working over Wi-Fi only, it will stream on AT&T's 3G network as well. The release is following AT&T's lift on a ban on the 3G-capable version of the application, which they initially put in place over concerns about it taking too much traffic for the network to handle.

Yesterday we thought AT&T was making significant progress in the right direction when they said in a press release that they had worked with Sling Media to optimize the SlingPlayer for iPhone, and were then allowing it to work on their 3G network. When asked, Sling Media said the app hasn't been changed since before and AT&T never worked with them on it.

"We didn't change anything," Sling Media's John Santoro told Ars. "AT&T never discussed any specific requirements with us."

AT&T announced today that they will now be allowing SlingPlayer Mobile [App Store, $29.99], and application for streaming TV to your iPhone to watch wherever you are, to run over the 3G network. The app was disabled over the 3G network due to bandwidth concerns and how it would effect the overall quality of the network, but now they say the code has been "optimized" which most likely means the developers had to change it to fit their bandwidth guidelines.

According to our friends at Gizmodo, the SlingPlayer app for iPhone will finally be hitting the App Store sometime today or tomorrow. We caught a glimpse of the app at Macworld earlier this year and were quite impressed. At the time Sling promised that streaming would be available over EDGE and 3G, although AT&T has since released a statement saying that "Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network."

As MacRumors reports, Sling Media recently announced on their website that SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone has been submitted to the App Store and is currently waiting for approval. They also posted a video preview demonstrating how the now completed app will function on the device. Sling Media promised at Macworld back in January that they would have the app submitted in March.
