iPhone Hacking: Enable Japanese Emoticons (AKA Emojicons) [Updated with simpler method]

Tips

Last week's 2.2 software update included quite a few goodies for most iPhone owners, but one in particular is only available to those in Japan. Unbeknownst to most of us in the States, Apple's added emojicons (or Japanese emoticons), although they're only available to customers in Japan. Thankfully Steven Troughton-Smith has figured out that a simple property list edit is all that's required. For the full instructions, read on.

You'll need a jailbroken iPhone and enough knowledge to grab the correct file, edit it properly, and put it back without pulling your hair out.

Camera Mod Takes Close-Up Pictures

Like most cameraphones, the camera used in the iPhone is a simple 2-megapixel one. As we've explained in the past, it has the advantage of being small, since it can take decent pictures in broader light conditions and without zooming. On the downside, that means it can't zoom. One user decided to do something about it, and modded his camera to take close-up macro shots using no external add-ons.

iPhone 2G Modded With Glowing Logo

in

I've been an avid MacBook Pro user and fan for some time, so this is probably one of my favorite mods yet. A group of Russian iPhone modders were apparently not satisfied with the iPhone's shiny chrome Apple logo, and decided to modify an iPhone 2G's back case to make the Apple logo glow, and pretty darn bright , too.
