iPhone OS 3.0

According to TUAW, several readers who use Microsoft Exchange email on their iPhones have reported that they're unable to retrieve encrypted messages after upgrading to iPhone 3.1.

Under iPhone 3.0, users were able to use an encryption option to retrieve mail, although it wasn't correctly encrypted. iPhone 3.1 corrects the problem by disabling access to encrypted exchange mail on devices other than the iPhone 3GS. This is because the 3GS is the only iPhone OS device that has the proper hardware requirements to handle the encryption.

Web auction site eBay's iPhone application [App Store] has been updated to version 1.4.0, the new version sporting push notifications as well as the ability to purchase items with PayPal directly from the app. According to MacRumors, the new push notification feature can let users know when they have been outbid or when the auction of a watched item is about to end.

A recently discovered iPhone OS 3.0 bug has become the center of attention on a lengthy Apple Discussions Board thread. According to iLounge, the bug appears to pertain only to photos with the name IMG_10000 or higher.

Macworld has stumbled on an interesting bug dealing with how your iPhone deletes (or more accurately, doesn't delete) email. If you use your iPhone for email, chances are you've deleted at least a few messages by now. What you may not know is that just because these messages are no longer accessible in the Mail app, they're not completely gone.

The Facebook crew has announced an update for their Facebook app for the iPhone and iPod touch to be available "very soon". The update is "98% done", and adds 15 new features to the app, including many optimizations for the features available in OS 3.0. It also sports an impressive new interface that should make navigating the app a great deal easier.

Yesterday Apple seeded a beta of iPhone 3.1 to developers to test with their applications. Although not listed with release notes, iPhone 3.1 comes with quite a few noticeable improvements as well as bug fixes. Forum member 370GT pointed out that 3.1 now comes with the option to save edited video as a copy instead of overwriting the original. He also pointed out that the phone vibrates when you start moving icons, and Voice Control now works through bluetooth headsets. We've also noticed that boot time has been greatly improved.

Also noted yesterday, MMS is enabled by default in 3.1, although the required service option hasn't been enabled by AT&T.

A strange bug has been causing trouble for some iPhone OS 3.0 users. We haven't seen it ourselves yet, but several users on Apple's discussion boards are reporting strange problems with app icons being either blank white squares, switching icons with other apps, or disappearing altogether. TUAW confirmed the strange bug when their own Mel Martin had the AT&T Navigator app and Reuters News icon switch places. One developer says issues like these were highly common in the beta releases, and weren't fixed until the final release of the software.
