iPhone OS 3.0.1

You may remember that in iPhone 3.0 a bug was discovered which kept email messages on POP accounts from being properly deleted. A demo of the bug can be seen here. At the time it was believed that Apple was aware of the issue and that a fix would likely appear in the 3.1 update.

Just as we expected, several people we've talked to report that the bug seems to have been resolved in iPhone OS 3.1. In fact, the issue may have been fixed earlier on in developer preview builds of 3.1. Good news for those of you worried about the security implications of this bug!

Yesterday Apple seeded a beta of iPhone 3.1 to developers to test with their applications. Although not listed with release notes, iPhone 3.1 comes with quite a few noticeable improvements as well as bug fixes. Forum member 370GT pointed out that 3.1 now comes with the option to save edited video as a copy instead of overwriting the original. He also pointed out that the phone vibrates when you start moving icons, and Voice Control now works through bluetooth headsets. We've also noticed that boot time has been greatly improved.

Also noted yesterday, MMS is enabled by default in 3.1, although the required service option hasn't been enabled by AT&T.

It's been a few days since iPhone 3.0 was released to the public and there's a lot of stuff in there! We've been playing with the software for quite some time and decided to compile a list of our favorite new features. Some of these are very high profile features, but we're hoping that we'll be able to point out a few things you haven't discovered yet. Read on for the big list!

And... it's live! Apple has officially released iPhone 3.0 to the general public. It can be downloaded through iTunes by clicking the "Check for Updates" button in the iPhone source page. It's available for both original iPhone and iPhone 3G owners at no cost. iPod touch owners can get the update for $9.95.

In case you were curious, the version available in iTunes carries the same build number (7a341) as the GM developer seed.

Clever folks with clever tricks have once again found a way to enable tethering on iPhone 3.0. The workaround allows AT&T subscribers (among others) to enable tethering without hacking or paying a fee. It works by tweaking the carrier settings with an iPhone configuration profile. After installing the profile, tethering is automagically enabled! Rumor has it that you can enable MMS in the same manner, although the file currently available doesn't seem to enable it. We've heard that it might disable Visual Voicemail, although we haven't tried it yet.

Tapulous' Tap Tap Revenge 2 [App Store] seems to be the first application (to our knowledge) to be posted to the App Store with support for push notifications. The new feature only works under the iPhone 3.0 software and allows players to invite their friends to a game.

Additionally, MacRumors reports that Apple has posted the iPhone 3.0 software to its servers for the iPhone 3G S. It's unlikely that the software will work on anything but the 3G S, and may not even load on a 3G. We recommend against trying this on anything but an iPhone 3G S.

All sorts of fun things have been discovered in the days since the iPhone 3.0 beta was released, and the fun continues today. Boy Genius Report has posted a screenshot (image below) which shows an option for "Find My iPhone," a feature which has yet to be announced. Engadget has also stumbled across a screen (image below) which suggests that video recording will be included in a future iPhone hardware revision.

Since its announcement yesterday, there's been quite a bit of speculation about what new features iPhone 3.0 will bring. BoyGeniusReport claims to have some concrete info which points to MMS and USB and Bluetooth tethering as two features which will definitely be included in the new software.
