The iPhone Dev Team has posted an iPhone OS 3.0-capable version of the PwnageTool for unlocking iPhone, iPhone 3G, and first-generation iPod touch running the OS 3.0 released Wednesday. It should be noted that it will not work for the iPhone 3G S posted a guide detailing how you should use their jailbreaking and unlocking tools based on your situation is.

Plans for this year's Pwn2Own 2009 hacking contest have been announced by TippingPoint. 2009's event will shift focus from computers to smartphones this year, starring (you guessed it) the iPhone 3G. The contest will challenge guests at the CanSecWest conference to try and hack the devices using their browser. The first person or team to hack the device will win the device itself and a $10,000 prize.

The iPhone Dev Team has officially released their 3G unlock, code-named yellowsn0w, to the Cydia app installer, which if not already available, should be available for download as soon as they get their repository in order. They also explained the message from earlier today. Interestingly, the unlock is not only able to unlock the latest firmware build, but requires it to work.

The Dev Team recently met at a 25C3 conference where they gave a presentation on the inner structure of the iPhone platform, its security measures, and how they circumvented them. You can check out the hour-long video of the slide show being presented by one of the members after the break.

As you might remember, the Egyptian government required Apple to disable the GPS functionality in iPhone 3G handsets sold in the country. We assumed this meant that the GPS hardware would be permanently crippled or removed entirely, but it turns out that at least the iPhones sold in Pyramid Park still have the GPS hardware installed, and it's possible to hack it to get it working again. The Dev Team just announced that team member MuscleNerd will be doing a live demo of their project codename yellowsn0w (a software unlock for the iPhone 3G). It will be done live over Qik, and will begin at 3PM EST, and will be announced over MuscleNerd's Twitter account. We'll post details as they become available. For many Mac users, the OS X 10.5.6 update broke their ability to pwn their iPhone or iPod touch. If you're one of them, then not to worry. A fix has been found that will get you hacking again in no time. It involves an Automator script and a few simple steps. However, bear in mind that this method alters kernel extensions which could potentially render your Mac inoperable. Proceed at your own risk!

Every three years, the office and Library of Congress ask if anyone has any suggestions for revising the DCMA. For those of you who aren't familiar, DMCA, or the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is a United States law that makes it illegal to produce or disseminate technology that is put in place to control access to copyrighted material. This time around, they are being asked to decriminalize jailbreaking your iPhone.

A new version of the Installer 4 beta has been released by RiP Dev and is available for download. Version 4.0v11 adds several features and bug fixes, including a new 'Update All' button for the updated category, scrollable package information, and an easier to use 'More Info' button.
