Catholic Confession in an App?

As we have all said a thousand times, there is an app for everything. Apparently the same is true with religion. Many churches have begun creating their own apps to stay up with the digital age. A new addition to the App Store has created quite a buzz – Confession: A Roman Catholic App created by Little i Apps, LLC. “Designed to be used in the confessional, this app is the perfect aid for every penitent. With a personalized examination of conscience for each user, password protected profiles, and a step-by-step guide to the sacrament, this app invites Catholics to prayerfully prepare for and participate in the Rite of Penance.”

This was the first app to receive a “blessing” from a Catholic Bishop, Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. But does the rest of the Church agree with this Church approved app? The Reverend Federico Lombardi, director of the Holy See Press stated, “One may not speak in any sense of confessing via iPhone. This cannot be substituted for by any information technology application.” Sorry folks, as far as the Catholic Church is concerned, your iPhone can do a lot of things, but it cannot absolve you from sin.
