Voice Mail Comes to Facebook…Sort of

iPhone users are slowly finding that an update to the Facebook Messenger app is rolling out to the App Store. With this most recent update comes the ability to send quick voice messages to friends, making Facebook a sort of social networking and voice mail app.

At the risk of sounding like a bad infomercial, we must say, “But wait! There’s more!

Not only is there the ability to leave voice messages, which can come in handy for relaying directions or other things that are cumbersome to type, but our Canadian friends will find that they can make actual VOIP calls through the Facebook Messenger app.

For the rest of us, the synopsis for the app in the App Store says that the ability to make VOIP calls will be available soon, and when it is available, a customer’s existing data plan will be used.

As for the voice message feature, we found it quite easy to use during testing. As the screenshot shows, you simply select a friend with whom to chat, and press the “+” key found to the lower left.

There, you will be presented with several options, one of which is to leave a voice message. Simply press the button, and then touch and hold the red button when you’re ready to record. If you want to send the message, simply release the button, or to cancel, “slide off” the button, as the instructional bubble states. Easy as pie, and quite cool, too.

With the addition of this feature, Facebook seems to be putting Skype on notice. It seems as if it’s only a matter of time before we all can make VOIP calls through our Facebook accounts. But then…who would we Facebook with?
